Some of you might already guess that I'm a Constructivist by training. In my studies in history and international relations, I have always been a firm believer that most things including tradition and identity are constructed entities. Before you go screaming that I have slipped into Relativism hear me out. Constructed identities and traditions are not bad things. They are also real. Is there a true identity and a true tradition? Yes. I believe in there is. The true self lies in the amalgamation of all identities that are used by you and imposed on you. Who you truly are is the sum of all your various identities. Confused? So is everyone else. We have countless masks and multiple hats, but each one describes us. Well my intellectual background helps with my work. Yet during training I wonder if my colleagues from other departments are going to be able to handle the shift in thinking that is needed. I kinda have two examples. One of them really is trying hard to shift her mindset from an objectivist to a constructivist one. She has trouble because her discipline is traditionally an objectivist one (PhD Chemistry). Another is from a part time staff, who for some reason, in my opinion, is a total idiot. We were going through the online system that we use in our daily work, and he kept asking simple questions. These questions could easily be answered if you just go into the system and play around a bit. For someone who is hired to be smart enough to get things done, he sure requires a lot of spoon feeding and hand holding. I like the first colleague better because she is trying her hardest, while the second one is just a total asshat. Actually the need to shift one's thinking is very difficult. It really is a paradigm shift for a lot of people. I heard that since the start of training week, 4 staff have resigned. I actually think that it is a good thing they resigned now instead of later, where it could have caused more harm to the organisation. I do hope they find more objectivist systems more suited to the way they look at things. In fact on Thursday, one of the Senior Directors said that if they don't think they like the system they should quit. No hard feelings, no questions asked. Down with a cold, so training week was tough. Trying to stay awake was a big part. On the plus side, they feed us real real well. Think I'm going to get real fat if I keep going for training. Looked at my schedule, and it's not going to be jammed packed. I actually have lull days where I have more time. Not so bad. Also I got my first full pay check. It's nice to get paid. =P
